You might have though password fields are protected under Windows. Characters in a password text field are shown as asterisks and cannot be copied to the clipboard.
But the passwords are not really hidden. The text fields is a regular window control, and the password control can be queried for the text inside it.
This means, for example, that if you told Windows to remember your dial up password, although it's shown as asterisks in the password text field, the real password can be easily revealed.
Snadboy's revelation is a handy utility that can show the underlying password in the password fields. Using a target-like cursor, you just have to bring the cursor to the wanted text field, and revelation will show you the password behind it.
Note: Windows NT's server manager shows asterisks in the 'user password' field, but the real password is not behind it, so it does not compromise domain security.
