Buffer Overflow Found in Outlook Express for Macintosh
9 Dec. 2001
Summary
Outlook express for Macintosh is a mail client developed by Microsoft. This mail client has a problem with handling of body strings, and buffer overflow occurs when sending it long strings without carriage return code.
When the Macintosh version of Outlook Express receives an email, it will try to parse it, if the email contains a long line, a buffer overflow will occur. Further the program will be unable to issue a valid "DELE" to POP3 server. This would cause the email to persist despite attempts to delete it.
The impact of this vulnerability may be the ability to execute arbitrary code on the target machine, simply by sending them a specially crafted e-mail (there is no need to open the affected e-mail for this attack to work).
