There is a lot of commotion over Intel's plan to ship the new Pentium III processors with a unique chip identifier (See our article: Intel Pentium III processor security cracked).
Now it seems that the mobile version of the Pentium II processors, already have this unique chip ID. Intel claim that this was only done to test the manufacturing process of the Pentium III, and that the ID is hardware disabled when the chips leave the factory.
However, one manufacturing line failed to disable this "feature", shipping out a large number of processors containing the ID.
