Vulnerable Systems:
* ColdFusion MX version 7.0.2.142559 for Linux.
* (Previous versions may also be affected.)
A patch was recently released to fix the vulnerabilities referenced in the Adobe Security Advisory APSB06-17. This patch was intended to correct insecure file permissions of multiple files within the Verity sub-directory of ColdFusion. Unfortunately, the patch archive creates an additional vulnerability.
The vulnerability exists due to the directory permissions inside the directory structure of the patch. The patch consists of an archive that is meant to be extracted over the the current Verity directory. This archive contains multiple files and directories that are world writable.
Exploitation of this vulnerability allows an attacker to execute code with root privileges. In order to gain root privileges from this vulnerability it is necessary to restart ColdFusion.
Workaround:
Change the permissions on the vulnerable scripts to be mode 0755.
Change the directory permissions of any 0777 permissions directories located under {cf_root}/verity/k2 to be 0755.
Vendor Status:
Adobe Systems Inc. has addressed this vulnerability by releasing updated archives. More information can be found in Adobe Security Advisory APSB07-08.
